    If you’re looking for a treatment for erectile dysfunction then you’re probably well aware of Viagra. And if you know about Viagra then you may also have heard of sildenafil. But how do they compare? Both are effective treatments for erectile dysfunction, with the same active ingredient. The only real difference is in the name. Sildenafil citrate (the active ingredient in Viagra) was originally developed to treat high blood pressure and angina pectoris. Despite showing little evidence of treating these conditions during testing, the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer serendipitously discovered the drug provided an unexpected oral therapy for erectile dysfunction. Nicknamed the little blue pill, Viagra changed the world as an FDA-approved ED treatment in 1998 as the first major erectile dysfunction treatment on the market. It’s one of the fastest-selling drugs in history, but has its era of treating erectile dysfunction come to an end? Until 2013, Pfizer Inc owned an exclusive UK patent on this popular ED medication. And in 2020, Pfizer’s remaining patents on viagra expired. Pfizer’s initial discovery opened a profound and global conversation about erectile dysfunction, but now this exclusive patent has come to an end — the race to replace viagra is on.
