Desloratadine 5mg Tablets

What is Desloratadine and what is it used for?

Desloratadine 5mg tablets are a prescription-only non-drowsy antihistamine treatment for allergic rhinitis. They prevent symptoms such as sneezing, congestion and runny nose.

The treatment is effective against allergy to pollens (hay fever) as well as household irritants such as dust mites and pet dander And should be taken once a day. It is not available to buy over the counter.

Desloratadine can be taken by adults once a day to keep allergy symptoms at bay. Each box contains 30 tablets and you can purchase up to 6 boxes in one transaction.

What is allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis affects 20% of people in the UK. It occurs due to a hypersensitive immune system – when certain allergies enter the nose, the immune system rejects them as if they were an infection such as the flu. To protect against the allergen, the body produces extra mucus, which leads to symptoms such as congestion and sneezing.

It is not completely understood why certain people develop allergies, though they sometimes run in families. Some people only experience these symptoms during high pollen season (this is seasonal rhinitis, often called hay fever); others suffer year-round from allergies to household irritants such as dust mites and pet dander.

How does Desloratadine work?

One of the principal chemicals the body releases in reaction to an allergen is histamine. This causes inflammation of the nasal passages. Desloratadine tablets inhibit the body’s production of histamine, providing relief from these symptoms. Desloratadine tablets can be taken alongside nasal spray and eye drop treatments for allergy symptoms.

Alternative Treatments

There are some non-medicinal methods to help combat hay fever symptoms. Some of these may include:

• Wear wrap-around sunglasses
• Keep windows closed when it is a day with a high pollen count.
• Try to have a shower after a day almost straight away. This will remove any trapped pollen grains from your hair and or skin.

There is an extremely large range of over-the-counter hayfever treatments you can purchase in any pharmacy, these vary from tablets to nasal sprays and also eye drops. You should try these before moving on to prescription-only medicine.

Desloratadine warnings

• Desloratadine is unsuitable for you if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

• It may be unsuitable for you if you have impaired kidney function.

Desloratadine dosage

Take one 5mg tablet each day, ideally at a similar time each day. Swallow the tablet whole with a sip of water, before or after a meal.

Desloratadine is most effective if taken every day. If you miss a dose, do not double your next dose to compensate.

Desloratadine also contains the following inactive ingredients to make up the complete product: Microcrystalline cellulose (E460), hypromellose (E464), hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, maize starch, lactose monohydrate, talc, macrogol, titanium dioxide (E171), indigo carmine aluminium lake (E132).

Desloratadine side effects

Not everyone will experience side effects when they take Desloratadine, however, if you do they may include:

• Headache
• Dry mouth
• Fatigue
