What are Threadworms?

Threadworms are tiny parasitic worms that infect the intestines of humans. They are the most common type of intestinal worm infection in the UK and are particularly prevalent among children. Threadworms are white and look like small pieces of thread, hence their name.

The main symptom of a threadworm infection is an itchy bottom, which is particularly noticeable at night. Other symptoms can include restlessness, weight loss, and irritability. If you or your child are experiencing these symptoms, it's important to seek medical advice.

Ovex Tablets and Suspension: An Overview

Ovex Tablets and Ovex Suspension are two forms of treatment for threadworm infections. They contain the active ingredient mebendazole, which is a type of medicine called an anthelmintic. Anthelmintics are used to kill parasites such as worms, and mebendazole works by preventing the worms from absorbing sugars which they need to survive. This causes the worms to die, after which they can be passed out of the body in the stools.

Both Ovex Tablets and Ovex Suspension are available over the counter, meaning they can be purchased without a prescription. They are suitable for adults and children over the age of two. However, they should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women, or by anyone with a known allergy to mebendazole.
